Understanding Ferry Pricing

Ferry prices between Barcelona and Mallorca vary enormously depending on when you book, when you travel, and which operator you choose. After tracking prices for over a decade, I can tell you that the difference between the cheapest and most expensive fare for the same crossing can be tenfold. The key to getting a good deal is understanding the pricing patterns and booking at the right time.

Cabin Supplements

Cabin prices are added on top of the basic passenger fare. Here are typical supplement ranges:

Inside Cabins

  • 4-berth inside: +€40–70 per cabin
  • 2-berth inside: +€50–85 per cabin
  • Single inside: +€45–75 per cabin

Inside cabins have no window but are perfectly comfortable for sleeping. Ideal for budget travellers.

Outside Cabins & Suites

  • 4-berth outside: +€60–100 per cabin
  • 2-berth outside: +€80–130 per cabin
  • Suite: +€120–200 per cabin

Outside cabins have a porthole or window. Suites offer extra space and premium amenities.

How to Get the Best Ferry Price

Book 6–8 weeks in advance for the best combination of availability and price. Earlier is better for peak season.
Travel midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) for lower fares. Weekend crossings, especially Friday and Sunday evenings, are the most expensive.
Compare all three operators. GNV is usually cheapest, but Baleària and Trasmed sometimes run promotions that beat GNV's standard fares.
Consider travelling without a car. Car hire in Mallorca is inexpensive and can work out cheaper than bringing your own vehicle on the ferry.
For British travellers: Remember that prices are in euros. With a good exchange rate, the ferry can be remarkably affordable. Some UK credit cards offer fee-free spending abroad.

Price Comparison: Ferry vs Flying

Many travellers wonder whether the ferry or a direct flight to Palma is better value. The answer depends on your circumstances:

Ferry Wins When...

  • You are travelling with a vehicle
  • You have lots of luggage (no baggage fees!)
  • You book early in low season (€15 fares)
  • You want to combine Barcelona + Mallorca
  • You are travelling with pets
  • You enjoy the journey as part of the experience

Flying Wins When...

  • Time is your priority (45 min flight)
  • You are travelling light (hand luggage only)
  • You find a very cheap direct flight
  • You are not visiting Barcelona first
  • Peak ferry prices make it uncompetitive

The sweet spot for many British travellers is the fly and ferry combination: fly cheaply to Barcelona, enjoy the city for a few days, then take the overnight ferry to Mallorca.
